Getting Laid Off (Fired): USA vs. The Netherlands
Layoffs are back…but it’s A LOT harder to get laid off (or fired) in The Netherlands (Europe) compared to the USA...this is what a social safety net looks like.
In this video, I’ll talk about the differences between The Netherlands and USA including:
- Layoff process (settlement/severance, Dutch rules)
- Healthcare (USA vs. The Netherlands)
- Unemployment benefits (USA vs. The Netherlands)
- Visa situation for foreigners
Plus tips! Hope this helps and if you get laid off…know that you’re not alone and sending you my best wishes.
David
📌 Note: I talked to dozens of people who got laid off + legal professionals for research. I cannot speak about my own agreement for confidential reasons.

Why I choose a "simple" Dutch life (as an American) | Slow living

It should only take you a long time to decide which option to buy THE FIRST TIME, not every single time you go shopping. You spend time making your decision, and thereafter you go straight to that product when you shop. What's the big deal ?

Dutch make more money than most Americans, simply because COL is much lower, and this includes health care, property taxes, food, education. Also note that most Americans live in shitty MDF framed housing with poor sound proofing and insulation, while most Dutch live in smaller but brick/concrete buildings.

I would probably go crazy because I just came back from schizophrenia after forcing myself to be back to the matrix. I went too deep into my mind that I saw reality as fluid and there was no anchor like I was just in a dream and it feels like I died. Maybe it only works for ordinary people and not for people who are by nature self-reflective.

In the US, there are many stores that are open 24/7 and so it is easy to satisfy your cravings even at midnight. Also, the portions served in restaurants including fast food restaurants are big. So even if you are not used to eating such large portions of food in the beginning, you get accustomed to it soon and it becomes a habit. You cannot even walk anywhere except in downtown because there are no sidewalks. US is the only country where people have to drive everywhere to get from point A to point B. So people who are health conscious have to make an effort to exercise. US is known to be the world leader after world war II and so it needs to keep up that image. They need to work fast and work long to stay ahead of the other countries. This mentality has led to people feeling like failures when they cannot meet their expectations and it could be one of the reasons for mental health issues. Despite all this there are people around the world (especially developing countries) who would give an arm and a leg to become US citizens because most people love money so much and there is a strong belief that if you have the desire to be successful in life, you can make it in the US.

Your comments are riddled with confirmation bias and therefore distort the reality of how things are. Before I point them out, let me state that I love the Netherlands and can fully understand why anyone would want to live there. I think the Netherlands is a great country and is one of the best countries in the world to live in. Here are the flaws and confirmation bias that I want to point out: 1. College is unaffordable in the US. That is nonsense. Anyone can go to a Junior College and then transfer after 2 years to an excellent state university. It only costs a fortune if a person chooses to go to an expensive private school or to go to school out of state, which no one has to do. The tuition for state colleges and universities is not expensive. And during college everyone can work part time to cover their expenses. Low income families can get student grants that will keep their cost even lower. The problem with many families is they don’t choose to go through the more affordable route and choose to go to expensive universities. Both of my kids went to state college and university. They both worked part time from their freshman year and by staying at home with mom and dad after graduation they were able to pay off their student loan in 1.5 years. They both have great jobs with high salaries even though they did not go to a top university. Many college students unfortunately are too lazy to work part time and pay the price once they graduate. 2. Crime. Yes, it is terrible in all the large cities in the US. It’s awful. But, no one has to live there. The suburbs are nice and safe. While there is no crime free neighborhood, they are pretty safe to live in. The media always highlights the terrible crimes in the major cities but don’t talk about the low crime rate in the nice suburbs. 3. Life balance. This is a personal choice. You make it sound as if Americans don’t have a choice. That is nonsense. NO ONE is forced to become an investment banker, lawyer, start-up employee, or work at any of the tech companies that require 60 hours a week or more. There are plenty of jobs that only require 9-5, Monday to Friday work weeks. Granted, the vacation time in the US is much less than in Europe. I know many people with wonderful balanced lives. They key is that a person has to put in the effort to get a job or a career that enables one to have the lifestyle that they want. 4. Job security. Everything has a trade-off. The laws protecting employees is much better in the Netherlands, but in exchange for that the taxes that Dutch people have to pay is ridiculous. The tax rates make it very hard for a normal Dutch person to achieve financial independence. The tax rates and tax shelters in the US are way better and gives normal people the opportunity to build real financial independence. In the Netherlands the population is totally dependent on the government to take care of them. You make it sound like getting laid off is a terrible thing. It isn’t because all a person has to do is get another job. Getting laid off is not the end of one’s career. I know many people, including both of my kids, who voluntarily change jobs every few years. Nobody, especially the younger generation believes in lifetime employment with one company anymore. In the San Francisco Bay Area, changing jobs due to personal choice or lay off is normal. 5. Comparing yourself to others. I had to laugh when you said this. This is not a requirement to live in America. If your parents or peers made you compare yourself to others then that is a reflection of their insecurity. Comparing or not comparing yourself to others is a personal choice. Absolutely no one is required to do so in the US. FYI: If you ever move back to the US, you can relax because you won’t have to compare yourself to others. I travel the world, and people everywhere like to brag. You must not travel much or you happen to just hang around very superficial people when in the US. I’ve met a few Dutch people and from other European countries who love to brag about how their country is much better than the US. I love the Netherlands. It’s a great country. But I still enjoy living in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area more because of all the benefits and advantages that it offers.

I'm from France and after living 12 years in London UK, I moved to SF, California for 9 years and there's something you just said about the States "It doesn't seem so united anymore, it seems quite divided" and that's how I felt living in San Francisco for 9 years and SF is not the worst city! But coming from London, England where white people, black people, asian people mingle and form this "This is a London thing" nation, then America became certainly, most definitely, the opposite of my beautiful London United experience. I miss the Californian scenery, I used to be a biker and used to ride my 600 CBR through the GG bridge and up Stinson Beach via the windy road. I miss a lot about SF, I even miss Karl The Fog, but I certainly don't miss seeing all these unfortunate homeless people living in a tent on a street. Europeans discovered America, killed its residents and exploited pretty much whatever there is to exploit....yep.

We dont have a housing crisis. We have a housing distribution crisis. Within my family, they own homes that can house 4-6 people each and the average occupancy is 1 or 2 people. It isnt worthwhile to rent rooms to people because of taxes and regulations. And it isnt possible to sell and move to a smaller apartment because the 1-2 person apartments cost as much or more than a 4 bedroom family home. This housing crisis has been intentionally caused by the government to drive up real estate prices and rent rates.

Yes, Dutch people pay a lot of taxes. But the government actually takes good care of us. In the US you pay a lot of taxes, and you might get f'ed by everyone because of money. In the US you lose pretty much everything if you don't find a new job. But in the Netherlands, they have to support you no matter what. Even unemployed people here can have relatively good lives while they don't or can't work at all, the Dutch government sponsors all of them. The Dutch government can't have people dying on their land

Like you said cost of education for you 13,000 euro's 2500 euro's for the locals and you don't complain.. But now we look outside your perspective to that of the university what do they prefer? A Dutch student paying 2500 or a foreign one that pays 5 times that amount? They would be thieves of their own pockets if they don't opt for the foreign student over the local one. From the Dutch student perspective your payment forces them out of their future if declined entry. You could also say a bit mean your bribing the university to take you over locals. It's all perspective isn't it? Even if i am completely wrong. If this is the locals perspective, with that mindset they are going to vote. On any party (we have a lot of them) that want to make it harder for foreign students. Same for asylum seekers with the housing crisis those people are way less welcome then they used to be. Not their fault not fair either but it is what it is. The locals in Amsterdam for example only see 20 years social housing waiting list. That is just nasty if your parents are mid 50's and want their children move out around 20-25. Not foreigners fault but it's an easy opt out less foreigners = more houses for the locals...

Don't tell them honestly what you think about them and their behavior! Don't talk or ask much when you are with them, but observe them very closely. Don't expect them to understand you, and don't forget that they can unite behind you and destroy you very easily 😊

True story (was even in a few Dutch newspapers) US company hired a Dutch Employee, they tried to FORCE him to work on a free day. He did not, and he got fired the next day. Judge was NOT amused, US company had to pay a big fine and had to pay his salary until he found. a new job. That Company nailed out after the verdict, (but had to pay money)

I dont really understand Americans. I am getting career in American company that is located in Europe as well. Life is simple. You work and you have the things yku want. I wonder how some people are homeless there. They cannot find work or just they are barbarians.

No look at cost of housing, Healthcare, and you need a car here in US to get anywhere (not enough sidewalkalks, cars are expensive) it's easy to fall through the cracks here

The US is basically not really what foreigners may think. It says he lives in California: but everything isn't the same everywhere, in every state In the US. The food situation where I live isn't like that at all. That many brands, etc in a store is crazy. Not all Americans everywhere are fat. The healthcare system is horrible, unreliable and way too expensive. Not many can afford homes and rents are very high. There is generally not any good public transportation in many places and owning a car is expensive. Many businesses have closed down all over the country, including restaurants, retail, etc. It's hard to afford college and to find decent jobs that pay enough to afford to survive or to live alone. The "roommate life" is a reality for so many. Crime has gotten worse and much more out of control...people generally don't always feel.safe. The gov't and media are very corrupt...this country isn't really "free", it's against it's own people and laws are not being upheld. The borders & country are currently under dangerous invasion. The economy is being destroyed. People are being divided against each other for political purposes. This is not a "happy" society, it's become kind of soulless, very stressful and US citizens are very frustrated and disillusioned. Many wish they could leave for a more affordable, peaceful, safe country, tbh....wherever that might exist.

Hm, if you work in the HR field and are still looking, I may have some connections. My gf is in the same field and both her current and former employer are looking for people. Let me know, I can send you both companies names to check out.

@@hidavidwen for (our) privacy reasons, that is something I can't disclose publicly. Her former employer is still my current employer. I'll send you a personal message via YT if possible. Edit: sent you an email, since that is on your YT page. Just forgot to end it professionally.

its also opposit. we will also tell you what we do like, or what does make us happy. you know exacly how we feel about things. so you wont have to guess it, or try to read our minds. because when does that work effectively?
